Dear Mayor Adams,

I am writing to urge you to take immediate action to fire the officers who killed Kawaski Trawick, a 32-year-old Black gay man, in his home.

Kawaski was cooking in his own Bronx apartment when Officers Brendan Thompson and Herbert Davis broke the chain on his door, illegally entered his apartment, and then tased and shot him within 112 seconds in 2019. They then closed the door and let him bleed out without administering aid. The NYPD deputy commissioner’s recent draft recommendation to drop misconduct charges and not pursue discipline sends the message that NYPD officers can break into your home, create a crisis, kill you, and get away with it.

As a New York resident, I am deeply concerned that you might let two officers who violated their training and department protocols, created a crisis where there was none, and killed a New Yorker remain on the force. I’m also concerned by the years of delays and obstruction caused by the NYPD that is now being used as rationale for why discipline may not happen.

You once promised us that you would not tolerate police misconduct or let abusive officers remain in your police department. This case is a test of whether you intend to keep that promise and whether your administration will hold individual officers and the NYPD, as an agency, accountable for wrongdoing.

As one of your constituents, I demand that you meet with the Trawick family and their team, as they have requested, before a decision is reached and then take immediate action to ensure NYPD Commissioner Caban fires the officers who killed their son.
